15 ’90s Celebrities Even The Biggest Fan Wouldn’t Recognize Today
Can you believe that the ’90s started over 25 years ago? I feel like I was just doing ’90s kid things like munching on Dunkaroos and playing with my Skip-It yesterday. With so much time passed, it makes sense that our favorite stars from that time period have changed their looks. Time goes by; you age,. It happens! But a lot of celebrities, like the 15 people on this list, are practically unrecognizable. Even their biggest fans from back in the day could bump into them on the street and they wouldn’t bat an eye! Some were child stars who look nothing like they did as kids. Others on this list have aged terribly, going from hot or hunky to just plain sad. Many of the stars listed here spent their celebrity fortunes on plastic surgery. From nose jobs to lip injections to Botox, their faces now look weird, stiff, and just plain unrecognizable from who we used to see on ’90s magazine covers. Keep reading to see before and after shots of 15 of your favorite ’90s celebs you would never recognize today!
15. Lara Flynn Boyle
Known best for her role as Donna Hayward in the creepy TV series Twin Peaks, Lara Flynn Boyle was a ’90s star that sort of flew under the radar. She also appeared in movies including Wayne’s World and Men in Black II as well as the television show The Practice. Boyle was known for her bookish yet beautiful appearance, but that has recently gone out the window. Now that she is in her 40s, the star became fearful of the visible signs of aging, so she received treatments including lip injections, Botox, collagen, and more over the years. Her once defined cheekbones and jawline now look puffy and saggy with too many wrinkle fillers and skin tightening procedures. While plastic surgery can be used to correct some physical flaws, she has clearly become addicted and gone overboard!
14. Jonathan Lipnicki
Remember the cute little scamp who starred alongside Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire? Well this is him now! Jonathan Lipnicki (now age 27) has gone from adorable tot to muscle bound man. Other highlights of his career include the Stuart Little movies and The Little Vampire. One of the most recognized child actors of the ’90s, he was nominated for a number of awards for his performances, including Critics Choice Award, Young Star Award, and Young Artist Award wins. From his first role in 1996, Lipnicki never really stopped acting, taking roles in films, TV shows, and web series to this day. He also trains in mixed martial arts and is heavily involved in philanthropy. Breast cancer research, juvenile diabetes research, and animal rights are just a few of this generous actor’s favorite causes. Who would have thought that little spiky haired guy could grow up looking like this?
13. Amanda Bynes
Amanda Bynes hit it big in 1996 when she was added to the cast of Nickelodeon’s All That. Her hilarious characters and rambunctious spirit helped her rise to fame and even landing her own sitcom The Amanda Show at the ripe old age of 13. Bynes then went on to have a booming TV and film career, starring teen films like Big Fat Liar, What A Girl Wants, and She’s The Man. But that’s where the star’s life fell apart. In her 20s, she engaged in reckless behavior involving drugs and partying, eventually leading to a DUI charge, a mental break, and a temporary retirement from show business. Luckily for fans, she has recently announced she will get back into television acting again soon. We’re all pulling for you, Amanda!
12. Haley Joel Osment
“I see dead people.” This line from The Sixth Sense is one of the most quotable movie lines of the ’90s and it was uttered by this guy, Haley Joel Osment. Now that he has a huge bushy beard making him look like Santa Claus’s younger brother, even the biggest fans of Osment would never recognize him. He got his acting start as the main character’s son in Forrest Gump and later went on to star in other major Hollywood movies like A.I.: Artificial Intelligence and Pay It Forward, allowing him to work with some of the most famous actors and directors in the world. Osment’s acting career waned in the early 2000s, but has recently picked back up with roles in films, television shows, and even a stint in the Broadway play American Buffalo. We doubt any movie will ever bring him the accolades of his breakout role, though.
11. Lark Voorhies
Every ’90s teen was obsessed with the TV show Saved By The Bell. Lark Voorhies played the wealthy, smart, and fashion-obsessed Lisa Turtle on the show. After playing such an iconic role, Voorhies put the brakes on her acting career, having only a few roles under her belt and appearing in nothing since 2012. Instead, she has turned her attention to her writing, penning three novels since 2010. She has also kept busy trying to look young since her most well-known role. It is easy to see from recent photos that Voorhies has gone under the knife, possibly getting treatments like a nose job, Botox, cheek fillers, and a face lift. Her skin looks unnaturally taut and her eyebrows look artificial. Her skin tone also suggests she may have had a skin lightening procedure done. She definitely no longer resembles Lisa Turtle!
10. Macaulay Culkin
If you are a ’90s kid and you don’t love the Home Alone movies, we can’t be friends. These hilarious Christmas classics are great in general, but Macaulay Culkin’s performance really puts these films above the rest. Culkin’s adorable smile and amazing acting made him America’s sweetheart in the 1990s, helping him to snag tons of film roles including Uncle Buck, The Good Son, My Girl, and Richie Rich. After tons of success as a kid (called the biggest child star since Shirley Temple), Culkin quit acting for nearly a decade until the film Party Monster. Since 2003, he has acted a bit in both TV and movies and fronted a comedy band called the Pizza Underground. A far cry from the tow-headed little cutie of his youth, Culkin now sports a creepy flesh-colored beard and looks like someone you’d run away from in an alley.
9. Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan was one of the prettiest rom-com queens of the ’90s. Starring in romantic films like When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless In Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail, the actress achieved fame and success both at the box office and during awards seasons. After appearing in at least a movie per year for over a decade, Ryan has since slowed her career down, appearing in just a few films and TV shows. In 2016, she starred in the movie Ithaca, which she also produced and directed. So why would one of the loveliest women in Hollywood want to change her looks? Like many actresses, Ryan tried to chase youth with plastic surgery. It appears she has gone under the knife for treatments like lip injections, facial fillers, and Botox. No woman in her 50s naturally has zero wrinkles! Even the biggest rom-com fan would never recognize Ryan now.
8. Jonathan Taylor Thomas
Every single ’90s girl, teens and toddlers alike had a major crush on Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Lovingly known as JTT, he was one of the decade’s biggest heartthrobs thanks to his role on TV’s Home Improvement. Because he was able to hold his own against one of America’s favorite comedians of the time Tim Allen, Thomas snagged tons of acting roles on both television and in films. After such success, he put acting aside to focus on school in the early 2000s, taking roles in movies and on TV intermittently to this day. Nowadays the teen idol looks nothing like he did on the cover of Tiger Beat magazine. With darker hair, beard stubble, and thick glasses, he looks like someone Randy Taylor would have made fun of way back when.
7. Emma Watson
Emma Watson is arguably the person on this list who has the most fame today. While many of these stars have left the limelight, Watson is still experiencing tons of success with her acting and modeling careers. When we first met her as Hermione in the Harry Potter films, Watson was an awkward little child with frizzy hair, bushy eyebrows, and bad bangs. Fast forward to today and she is always one of the most glamorous women on the red carpet. Since the Harry Potter series ended, Watson has acted in a number of major films including Beauty and the Beast and The Perks of Being a Wallflower but has also done lots of other things, too! She got a degree from Brown University and is heavily involved in women’s rights work.
6. Renee Zellweger
Renee Zellweger appeared in a wide range of highly-acclaimed films in the ’90s and ’00s. From Jerry Maguire to Bridget Jones’s Diary to Chicago, it is easy to name a Zellweger movie you love. Her work garnered her lots of nominations and awards including SAG, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Academy Awards. After tons of hard work in the public eye, this actress decided to take a break from acting to recover, appearing in nothing between 2010 and 2016. Although she claims that she did not have plastic surgery done on her face, this is almost impossible to believe. She claims that the wider appearance of her eyes is a result of her years-long hiatus from acting and that she no longer looks exhausted. However it happened, I still would have never recognized her!
5. Pamela Anderson
Known in the ’90s as a crazy party girl, Pamela Anderson has recently emerged looking and acting her age in the best way. She began her career as a model and gained fame as Playboy Magazine’s Playmate of the Month in February 1990. After that, she went on to star on TV shows like Baywatch, V.I.P., and Home Improvement. Anderson also appeared in smaller roles on tons of television shows and movies and still acts today. She has even appeared on a number of reality shows. Apart from acting and modeling, Anderson is a major activist for causes like animal rights, AIDS research, and the American Liver Foundation. Her entire look, hair, makeup, and outfit, is a major makeunder, giving us old Hollywood glamour that fans of her wild days would never recognize.
4. Calista Flockhart
Calista Flockhart is best known for her role on the iconic ’90s legal show Ally McBeal. After playing the title role on that series, she went on to star on Brothers & Sisters and Supergirl as well as appearing in a few films. Her work was highly praised, earning Flockhart Golden Globe and SAG awards along with Emmy nominations. Flockhart has always been known for her slim figure and big eyes, but today you would hardly recognize the gorgeous ’90s star. Time has not been kind to her, and her rumored plastic surgery doesn’t help, either. Her once defined face is now puffy, indicating she may have had fillers and Botox injections along with a face lift and a nose job. She has had so much work done, it’s like a whole different person from Ally McBeal!
3. Mara Wilson
Another beloved ’90s child star, Mara Wilson made a major impact with just a few roles. Starring in family favorites like Mrs. Doubtfire, Matilda, and Miracle on 34th Street, the young star stole the hearts of America with her amazing acting talent. However, after her mother’s tragic death when she was just 8 years old, Wilson lost her passion and only took a few more roles to date. Instead, she now focuses on her writing career, where she has successfully published a book and produced a play in the New York International Film Festival. She also works for the New York City nonprofit organization Publicolor. Time has certainly changed the innocent, adorable face of Mara Wilson, though she still has her signature bob and bangs to help us recognize her!
2. Jaleel White
Of all the transformations on this list, I think Jaleel White has changed the most. This actor became a household name (and face) with his breakout role as Steve Urkel on the hit show Family Matters. His goofy mannerisms and signature taglines were instantly recognizable by anyone with a television. In fact, White later admitted that he felt so defined by the role that casting agents were hesitant to give him other roles. While he did eventually manage to get some bit parts in movies and on TV, his main role after Family Matters was voicing Sonic the Hedgehog on a number of animated series featuring the character. Well nowadays, he is anything but geeky Steve Urkel! White has grown some facial hair and clearly hit the gym, making even his character’s sexier alter ego Stefan look like a dweeb. This is one ’90s star we can all appreciate today!
1. Lil Kim
Lil Kim (whose real name is Kimberly Denise Jones) is arguably one of the best female rappers of all time. Known as the Queen Bee before Beyonce, she has sold millions of records since her career started in the early ’90s. She hung out with other famous New York rappers of the time including the Notorious B.I.G., with whom she allegedly had an affair. After spending some time in jail for lying to a grand jury, Lil Kim continued her career. She performed on the TV show Dancing With The Stars and continues to record albums to this day. She is known for her many iconic hair, makeup, and fashion looks, but in the last 2 years, Lil Kim has totally changed her appearance due to tons of plastic surgery.
