We’re all familiar with the kind of websites we don’t want appearing in our work computer’s browser history. Adult content, gambling sites and Breitbart news – all probably sackable offences. But what about the kind of stuff that’s so unsafe for viewing it’s just not safe for life (NSFL), never mind work? These sites aren’t hidden away on the deep web, the dark web or behind any kind of mysterious encrypted network. They are out in the open. Roaming freely on the surface web next to reviews of your favourite Netflix binges or intricate GoT fan theories that blow your mind on the regular.

Just looking at some of the gore, perversion and morbid sickness on these websites can leave you with secondary trauma – or, at the very least, flashbacks, night terrors and a deep feeling of regret.

To save your eyes from most of the horrors, we’ve done the research for you and clicked the links no one should ever click. These sites can really mess you up, guys, be careful out there. Read on to find out just what’s lurking online that could take you beyond your limits and possibly get you put on a register.

15. Best Gore – The worst of the web

This is a site so disturbing that it got its owner arrested for corrupting public morals. Which tbh is a huge understatement and doesn’t really cover the NSFL horrors you can see here. Think executions, suicides, tortures, mutilation and horrific accidents. All captured on camera for people to watch. It’s the place where terrorist videos can be seen, graphic videos of corpses being dismembered can be shared and users can comment on the content. Which only really adds to the truly unsettling vibe. Seeing a casual ‘lol’ slung in the comments feed of a drug cartel’s botched beheading reminds you that millions of people are watching these videos for kicks.

14. Fifth Nail – The blog of a convicted serial killer on death row

Our twisted brains love nothing more than a glimpse into the world of a serial killer. Dexter, anyone? Except our sanitized and toned down TV shows don’t ever get dark enough to really creep us out. No, for that you’re going to need to read Fifth Nail, the blog of a convicted serial killer, sexual predator and r*pist. This collection of posts is one scary a*s journal written by convicted murderer and pedophile, Joseph E. Duncan III. His crimes span almost 30 years and began when he was just 15. Duncan r*ped a 9 year old boy at gunpoint. Fifth Nail details the brief time he spent out of jail, while Fifth Nail Revelations is updated from prison. Currently on death row, he sends letters out to a blogger who uploads them for the world to read.

13. Skyway Bridge – Suicide stats, voyeurs and creepy obituaries of recent jumpers

In the darkest recesses of the web there are suicide voyeurs. Individuals who get their kicks from watching people commit suicide or even goading them into killing themselves online. Lurking in chat rooms – there’s not really an individual site that hosts their twisted past time. But then there’s Skyway Bridge. This NSFL page tracks the suicides from Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida. The fourth most popular bridge of choice for end game jumpers, the Skyway Bridge site has stats going back to 1998. Which wouldn’t be all that disturbing until you realize the site is actively seeking out webcam feeds for the bridge and users regularly post activity seen on the highway. This includes video footage of EMTs on scene and images of recent jumpers. Stats so far for 2017? 9 suicides, 19 possible, 1 survivor, 2 saves.

12. Rate My Poop – Check out a stranger’s toilet bowl

It doesn’t take a genius to guess what’s happening on this steaming pile of internet code. Yep, people rate other people’s feces for fun. Or maybe they enjoy the sheer horror of staring at someone else’s recently birthed food baby? Whatever’s going on here it’s deeply disturbing, NSFL and definitely maxes out the ick-factor meter. Pay a visit to the site and you too can pass judgement on any number of deposits. You’ll also be given the gender and age of the pooper – so at least there’s some backstory to accompany the bog-based logs. You’ll also be given the date the number 2 was dropped off at the pool, so you can browse the freshest evacuations. Gross.

11. Rotten – Content your eyes will never be able to un-see

When a website describes itself as ‘the soft white underbelly of the net, eviscerated for all to see’, you know you’re in for a rough time. And rotten doesn’t disappoint – depending on your eagerness to see things such as deformities, autopsy photos or perverse carnal acts. Whatever kind of ‘wrong’ you’re looking for, you’ll probably find it here. Though the site is rarely updated now, its full NSFL library of articles is still online along with adult content, nudity and macabre and unpleasant videos your eyes will never be able to un-see. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Fun fact: the creators of Rotten are also linked to Rate My Poop.

10. Opentopia – an intrusive peek inside homes around the world via webcam

Opentopia is just one of a handful of sites that gives you access to live feeds from hundreds of webcams around the world. Not too disturbing at first glance, that is until you realize many of the people you’re watching don’t know that you’re watching them. In fact, you could find yourself tuning in to your own webcam feed one day. With everything from seemingly innocuous security camera feeds to footage of children’s bedrooms, things can get real dark, real quick on Opentopia. The creeper’s version of Big Brother, where an innocent attempt to gawp into someone’s living room could see you getting an eyeful of a surprise.

9. Bugshare – the fetish of sharing HIV – with or without consent

The AIDS crisis of the 80s was a dark time. Many feared contracting the disease and today almost all of us make sure we play safe to avoid HIV. Almost all of us, that is except for bug chasers. A cult movement within the gay community, men offer to go bareback in the bedroom in order to contract HIV. Bug sharers (men with HIV) see their positive status as a gift and want to ‘share’ their illness with willing partners. Also called ‘pozzing’ you’ll often see this listed on dating profiles such as Grindr, where bug chasers can pick up dates. Disturbing, but things get a whole lot darker when you realize there’s also a niche fetish side to bug sharing. Some participants stealth share by staying unprotected in the bedroom – without revealing their status, for kicks.

8. Heaven’s Gate – the guide to hitching a UFO ride after death and becoming ‘above human’

In the 90s police swooped in one San Diego address, only to find 39 dead bodies. The group had committed mass suicide trying to reach a UFO. Convinced by the cult leader, Marshall Applewhite, that after their deaths, the UFO would carry their souls to an ‘above human existence’ the 38 followers took an overdose and put bags over their heads to end their lives. Though they didn’t all die at the same time. The deaths were staggered so some group members could assist with the suicides and clear up afterwards. Their website is still active, complete with details of how to find the “Door to the Physical Kingdom Level Above Human”. There’s even a cult member who stayed behind to maintain the site and answer emails.

7. Run the Gauntlet – A series of increasingly depraved, puke-inducing videos

If you’ve got a strong stomach and think nothing can shock you, pit your wits – and possibly your sanity, against the puke-inducing run the gauntlet site. Though this isn’t a game. It’s a series of real-life videos that get more and more graphic, gruesome and disturbing as you work your way through the list. Many hardcore reddit users boast how far they’ve gotten, with many checking out before they reach the final video. Rumoured to be titled ‘three guys, one hammer’ the footage is said to show the savage murder of a man in a wooded area of Ukraine. Described as mentally scarring, you have to sit through a lot of horrifying footage, before reaching the end.

6. Rectal Foreign Bodies – check out the x-rays of weirdest things found in a body cavity

So you’ve rated someone else’s poop and you’re looking for something a little more edgy, because really after a while all poops look the same, right? Well Rectal Foreign Bodies is going to blow your mind. Essentially a catalogue of all the weird and wonderful things the human population has managed to stick up their butts. And boy do things get disturbing here. You’ve got your obvious suspects (hello adult toys) but then there’s just the bizarre stuff. We’re talking plantain – hilariously captioned ‘with condom’, a FROZEN pig’s tail and a kangaroo tumour. All the incidents – and accompanying x-rays have been submitted by medical professionals. All legit – with a few clearly labelled spoofs for extra internal cavity lolz.

5. Cutedeadguys – A forum for necrophiliacs crushing on dead men

If you’re morbidly fascinated by death and wondering how to take that to the next level, take a look at cutedeadguys. A corner of the internet dedicated to posting pictures of the deceased – so long as they are attractive, of course. The website’s banner claims that “dead dudes rawk” but their rawking days are well and truly over. A creepy necrophiliac hangout – many of the images are available to members only. But users share pictures, as well as viewing them. Images include dead soldiers, a man lying in a pool of blood and photos taken in morgues. There’s also a section on the forum for dead girls.

4. The Cannibal Cafe – a place for real-life cannibals to hang out

Thanks to archive.org, the Cannibal Cafe may have been shut down, but the archived pages are still accessible for anyone brave enough to read them. The forums are full of people wanting to eat human flesh and, perhaps more disturbingly, people who wanted to be eaten. As well as cannibal hook ups, there were recipes for the best way to cook a person along with ads selling human meat – frozen and fresh. The site’s downfall was the notable cannibal case in 2002. A Cannibal Cafe user killed and ate another man, though he was a willing participant. The two didn’t meet on the forum but it was enough to shut down the cafe for good. Though, it does beg the question, where are the cannibals buying their frozen meat from now?

3. Gebrauchte Tampons – a place to buy used tampons

Anyone familiar with Orange is the New Black will remember the used panty selling storyline. If you were grossed out by that, then this online retailer is really going to leave you feeling queasy. This German outlet sells used tampons. I know, gross, right? If you’re not already skipping to the next entry on our list, bravo – you have a stomach of steel. Selling the used goods for over 12 years now, the website has a long tradition of serving the fetish market. You can even view images of the women providing the goods – except the shots are just of their butts. Presumably you wouldn’t want the whole world to know you sell your used lady-products to fetishists? Interested? A tampon worn for 5 minutes will cost you up to 18 Euros while one worn for 12 hours will set you back almost 250 Euros.

2. Murderabilia – Collect bloodstained clothes from murder victims online

Ever wanted to collect something but didn’t know where to start? Pokemon are so 2016 (or 1997 – depending on your generation) and snow globes just won’t cut it. How about some creepy murder memorabilia or … Murderbilia to give it a catchy title? Auction sites and specialist online retailers are flogging homicide related items to the highest bidder. Buy a set of the Chicago Ripper’s mugshots – perfect decor for your downstairs cloakroom – or treat yourself to a Charles Manson signature – perfect decor for absolutely no room in your house, tbh. But as Ed Gein once said, “every man has to have a hobby”. Pity his was murdering and bodysnatching.

1. Sonic Passion – when your love of Sonic the Hedgehog reaches new and disturbing heights

Though the original site has been deleted from the web, the love for Sonic Passion stays strong in forums, reddit posts and geek culture. It was a place where toonphiles could share their innermost thoughts about getting intimate with cartoon characters – but more specifically, getting it on with Sonic the Hedgehog. The things they wanted to do to Sega’s spikey hero! Lovingly sketched artwork depicted how Sonic and his human lovers might procreate – and not surprisingly they are all deemed unsuitable for viewing here. But picture it in your mind now, and you’ll never see Sonic chasing a ring in the same way ever again.
