15 Most Paused Moments In Popular Movies
Making a movie is no easy business. Millions of dollars go into these blockbusters that can be a hit or a miss at the box office. Every detail is meticulously planned out, down to a T. That’s why when eagle eyed audiences catch moments that make us go ‘WTF?’ we reach out with our Cheetos dust fingers and hit that pause button. Why? Let’s think.
What exactly makes us hit pause? It can be a sexy scene that we can’t get enough of or a moment that we’ve heard about that is so highly anticipated it stops the show. Whatever it is, you can bet that if you’re pausing it, so are millions of others. Have you stopped to think what it was like way back when, in the time of the VHS? It was way more difficult than skipping back on our DVD’s a few seconds before we continued on our merry way. Isn’t technology a beautiful thing?
I’ve scoured the internet to get inside the brains of many an avid movie buff, to see what the most paused movie moments of all time are – it’s an interesting read. If you thought it was all raunchy sex scenes, then you’re wrong (mostly), there are some fan conspiracies and much more in here too. Grab your popcorn, get your remote at the ready and settle in. Let’s get started.
15. FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH
Fast Times at Ridgemont High was one of the most iconic 80’s movies, thanks in part to actress Phoebe Cates who starred as Linda Barrett, and Jennifer Jason Lee who played Stacy Hamilton. The movie was adapted from the book of the same name, by Cameron Crowe. If reading isn’t your thing but you’re partial to watching movies (particularly those with beautiful girls in bikinis) then you may want to give this a go. The most paused scene is when Cates goes for an afternoon dip in a tiny two piece, and as she exits the pool looking like a sun drenched goddess, she removes her swimsuit completely. That scene got a lot of hormonal teenagers through puberty, that’s for sure.
14. WILD THINGS
Skipping forward a decade, let’s take a look at the 1998 movie, Wild Things. The movie is nothing if not raunchy, and could have been thought up by a teenage boy. Rather than praised for its clever story line, the film gained notoriety for being sexually explicit. One of the major scenes features a threesome with a man and two women, something that is typically unheard of in big blockbuster movies of this caliber. Although there are arguably several pause worthy moments in this flick, the award for most paused goes to the kissing scene between co-stars Neve Campbell and Denise Richards.
13. BASIC INSTINCT
Possibly one of the most paused moments in movie history, the infamous scene where actress Sharon Stone uncrosses her legs to expose herself is known throughout the world. It was a daring move from director of the 1992 movie, Paul Verhoeven. While the scene made headlines round the world, years later Sharon Stone would admit to being unaware of the extent of it until she watched the movie for the first time. ‘When we did it, it was going to be an innuendo and the director said, ‘We’re seeing the white of your underwear, I need you to take them off.’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t want you to see anything and he’s like, ‘No, no you’re not going to.’ So I gave him the underwear, he put them in the pocket of his shirt, and he said, ‘Now watch on the monitor…’ In those days… it’s not like now where everything is high definition, and when I looked at the monitor you really couldn’t see anything.’
12. CABIN IN THE WOODS
The 2012 movie hailing from Buffy the Vampire Slayer Mastermind Joss Whedon was a cult hit almost instantly. It’s a complicated venture with some unexpected twists and turns, and a satirical look on the traditional horror movie. In one scene, scientists bet on the outcome of the main characters, if they will live or die and which of the monsters they will choose. There’s a huge whiteboard with lots of different names of potential creatures. Although you’re only shown it for a moment, viewers often hit that pause button to see what other nasties they could have been subjected to.
11. TEEN WOLF
There are lot of paused moments in 80’s movies especially, have you noticed? Teen Wolf is no different. Rather than being something sexual as we’ve previously seen, it’s actually a mistake that gets paused the most often. In the final scene of the movie, just before the credits start to roll, a frame of a background actor with his pants down sneaks on in there. A group of spectators stand up and cheer – and if you can hit that button quick enough, you can see the offending actor standing up with his zipper down. Weird, right? Poor editing or some sort of inside joke? Your guess is as good as mine.
10. THE LITTLE MERMAID
What on earth could warrant the 1989 Disney hit, The Little Mermaid to be halted, you ask? How about a priest with a boner, would that do it? In one of the final scenes of the movie at the wedding of Ursula and the Prince, the short and stout little priest looks like he’s very excited about the union. We’re sure it’s just an error in the animation – a simple design flaw. However, it really doesn’t look very PG at all. Couple that with the giant penis eagle eyed viewers detected in King Triton’s palace and this Disney movie is no where as innocent as it might look at first glance. Shame on you, Walt.
9. TOTAL RECALL
What’s better than two breasts? Three! The 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Total Recall caught fans slightly off guard when they introduced us to the mutant hooker Mary with three breasts, played by actress Kaitlyn Leeb. It just goes to show that you can find just about anything in the slums of Mars, and anything in an Arnie movie. Viewers often stop to take a good hard look at the infamous third boob – as well as a good chuckle too, of course. Leeb later went on record to say that it was one of the most embarrassing parts she had ever played.
8. PSYCHO
The master of horror, Alfred Hitchcock, gives us plenty to stop and stare at in all of his movies, but none more so than the 1960 film, Psycho. Anthony Perkins plays serial killer Norman Bates superbly well, gifting us with one of the most hated characters in pop culture history. Famous for his mommy issues and penchant for taxidermy, Bates and his mother murder people at their motel. Eventually, the jig is up and Bates is captured and tried. When he is arrested, Bates looks directly into the camera and smiles – a superimposed skull is placed over his face for the briefest of seconds, and it’s that moment that has viewers reaching for their remotes.
7. WOLF OF WALL STREET
The 2013 film made a sex icon out of Margot Robbie, who played Leo DiCaprio’s wife, Naomi, in the biopic. There are many show stopping scenes in this movie thanks to Robbie, who plays the unsatisfied housewife brilliantly. To name but a few, there’s the moment she rolls around in her underwear, showing off to the mansion security team. Let’s face it, any movie where Margot Robbie is partially clothed and is acting seductively is going to be paused more times than you can count. The Wolf of Wall Street was a great movie for a multitude of reasons, but Margot was definitely up there.
6. BOOGIE NIGHTS
The Year is 1997, and it’s time for Mark Wahlberg to show us his massive…acting talent. In the film inspired by the world of adult cinema, it goes without saying that at some point, Wahlberg was required to drop his trouser and bare all to the viewers at home. Sadly for us, Mark wouldn’t go that far and instead used a prosthetic big enough to poke your eye out. It was still a pause worthy moment that saw a lot of housewives gasping at the size of his junk and many more wishing it was the real thing. Maybe Wahlberg just wasn’t comfortable baring that much of himself to the camera – or maybe there wasn’t much to bare? Sorry Mark.
5. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS
If you think Star Wars has been done to death, then I am right there with you. That doesn’t mean that the billions of die-hard fans out there haven’t come up with a theory about almost everything in the sci-fi movies, though. At the very end of the 2015 instalment, The Force Awakens, Rey gives Luke Skywalker his trusty old lightsaber. As he does so, fans noticed that to his right there is an upward stone which looks suspiciously like a gravestone. Of course this sent obsessed viewers into a frenzy and theories abound about what it could be, but it’s mostly like just a stone. That doesn’t stop them pausing this scene continuously.
4. WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT
The 1988 crime cartoon caper, Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a stroke of genius. Not only did it introduce us to the world of cartoons interacting with their human friends and follow the plight of one innocent rabbit, we got to see the sexiest cartoon redhead ever, Jessica Rabbit. With her fiery locks, come-to-bed eyes and ample bosom, Jessica stole the hearts of many. There’s one moment in particular that is often re-watched and paused. While Jessica performs a variety of dance moves, it appears that she isn’t wearing any underwear. Don’t worry, if you thought you were a bit odd for having a crush on a cartoon character, millions of others did too. You are not alone.
3. IRON MAN
The world of Marvel films seems like it will never die, doesn’t it? With characters popping up all over the place, new films are constantly being released to satisfy public desire. Back in the 2008 movie, Iron Man, there’s one scene that is frequently paused by Marvel buffs. As Robert Downey Jr adjusts his suit, in the background you can just spot a prototype of Captain American’s unfinished shield. Most of the Marvel movies are filled with references to other characters from the comic book universe, but this one went relatively under the radar. It would be another 3 years before Chris Evans would hop onto our screens as America’s hero.
2. JURASSIC WORLD
The latest instalment in the uber-popular Jurassic Park franchise, 2015’s Jurassic World took audiences on a thrill-seeking ride with Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt. You’d be forgiven for thinking that surely it’s the amazing graphics and realistic looking dinosaurs which audiences focus on – but it’s not (are you really that surprised?). More than anything else, the one thing people wanted to take time out of their days to catch is the dude carefully running away from impending doom with two margaritas. If you were in a situation that inevitably meant certain death, wouldn’t you do the same? I know I would.
1. MAN OF STEEL
Going back to the superhero universe, DC also sneaked a little something into the 2013 superman reboot, Man of Steel. While Superman is doing his thing fighting the bad guys in outer space, he grabs on to a satellite – and it didn’t take long for people to notice who was the manufacturer. The piece of teach has a Wayne Enterprises logo on the side of it, meaning that it was made and distributed by none of than Bruce Wayne AKA Batman. It was a handy hint that fans could expect the other caped crusader to pop along at any time.
