Calling all toilet lovers, lol; is there even such as thing? Well if you happen to fall among this elite group of people obsessed with toilets you’re really going to love this list. Gone are the days of boring old ceramic toilets, these days people are putting a little, or a lot more effort into designing their ‘throne’ and to say some of them are fit for a king would be an understatement.
From the space inspired toilet apt for an alien, to the super expensive pooper that cost more than your car, this list certainly has it all. But beware, after viewing this epic roundup of crazy toilets from around the world you might get a little ‘toilet envy,’ and who could blame you? But don’t you worry, this might spur your creative juices and maybe one day you’ll create your own crazy invention; after all the idea has to start somewhere.
Thankfully the toilet has come a long way from chamber pots, communal outhouses or even worse, holes in the ground. Yes, our forefathers had it rough, that is until the flush toilet — and of course indoor plumbing— was created. Let’s give thanks to Sir John Harrington who actually invented the prototype in the 16th Century, although Thomas Crapper often gets credit for the invention. After Harrington, in 1955 Alexander Cumming patented the first flushing water closet. Years later Crapper picked up where these men left off, so let’s thank them all and get to these 15 photos of the craziest toilets from around the world.
15. Ice Toilet
Calling all hotties! What better way to beat the summer heat than by planting your booty on a toilet made from pure ice? Well if you decide to visit the ice gallery in Seoul, South Korea you’ll be able to do just that. The world’s first indoor ice sculpture gallery focuses on the theme of ‘Korean Households’ and has iced replicas of living room, kitchen, bathroom and other household items.
The temperature in the gallery is -5c so prepare to bundle up for this unique experience. Oh, and don’t put your naked butt on the icy toilet or the term “freezing your a** off” will take on a whole new meaning.
14. Motorcycle Toilet
In 2012, a Japanese toilet company called TOTO unveiled their latest innovative design – it was a motorcycle toilet called the Toilet Bike Neo. In case you’re wondering, this mobile toilet bike doesn’t run on gasoline and it doesn’t run on electricity either. So what is required to power up this green motorcycle? Poop, of course!
Well to be fair it’s not your poop, so don’t panic. The Toilet Bike Neo actually runs on biogas which is produced from fertilized, compressed and purified livestock waste, along with the use of household wastewater. The three wheeled motorcycle can go up to 180 miles on a tank of animal waste and it’s well equipped with a 250cc engine. This green motorcycle was created as an environmentally friendly initiative by the company.
13. Hidden Toilets
At the Sulabh International Museum of Toilets in Delhi, India, you’ll be quite surprised to find normal toilets cleverly disguised as normal pieces of household furniture. There are some unusual toilets on display, with one being a table with a hidden toilet inside. Initially the furniture seems like a regular coffee table but upon further inspection, the table top opens up to reveal a secret toilet.
The toilet museum also features what looks like a normal couch, but when the seat or cover comes off, you’ll notice a secret toilet compartment. Another cleverly disguised toilet looks like a pile of books, but lift the book cover and you’ll see a comfy toilet seat underneath.
12. Fishtank Toilet
I pity the poor fish who has to live in one of these. The fishtank toilet is very creative, and also very creepy, especially for the fish. I mean what fish wants to live in a bathroom and watch humans poop? And I don’t want my pet fish to watch me while I poop either, but hey, different strokes for different folks.
This nifty bathroom appliance is called the ‘Fish n Flush’ toilet tank and it is a fully functional toilet and aquarium. It comes with a two-piece aquarium tank, artificial plants, filter system with pumps and a flush valve. Some models also have LED lights.
11. Transparent Elevator Toilet
How many people can say they had to chance to pee or poop in an elevator? Well my personal statistic says about 1 percent, including the people who live in penthouses in Guadalajara, Mexico. The house in itself is quite unique but the standout feature is indeed the toilet, which sits atop an elevator shaft with a glass floor that looks down 15 levels.
According to the architects that designed the space, that section was originally intended for a second elevator. However, it was never installed and so the glass, elevator toilet was created! Personally I don’t want to look down 15 stories through a glass floor while I’m on the toilet, but that’s just me.
10. Steampunk Toilet
Sculpture Mati Karmin made an unusual ‘throne’ fit for a steampunk king, or queen. The unique piece was created from naval mine shells dating from WWII to the 1960s. He found the deserted Soviet submarine base in his hometown of Estonia.
The creative Estonian artist created the artistic piece as part of a collection known as ‘Marinemine furniture’, which he worked on for five years. It also includes an armchair, fireplace, bathtub, cupboard, cabinet, chandelier, bed, writing desk and of course the infamous steampunk toilet. I must admit it certainly doesn’t look like the most comfortable toilet in the world, but as for the most creative, it certainly makes the list!
9. Swarovski Crystal Toilet
If you’re thinking that this Swarovski crystal toilet must be super expensive, you’re right; this fabulous lavatory doesn’t come cheap. Sitting on this throne will set you back 75,000 dollars but don’t worry, it also comes with a ‘blinged out’ sink and bathtub for that price.
This fancy toilet was designed by Jemal Wright and the collection is called ISIS. In Jemal’s own words, this collection redefines bathroom couture, and each piece is handset with the world’s finest Swarovski crystals. The company offers a variety of shapes and sizes to pick from and there are over 60 colors of crystals to choose from as well.
8. Loveseat Toilet
This one is created for the totally in love couples who don’t want to spend a minute apart from each other. The toilet features two seats so that users can sit back to back while they do their business.
The creation is supposed to be an environmentally friendly initiative as both toilets only require one flush. However, I’m pretty sure that they would both still need two tanks of water anyway, so I’m not too sold on this one. Oh, and another thing I’m not sold on; going ‘number 2’ while my significant other is sitting beside me going ‘number 2’, too. Ewww!
7. iPoo Toilet
Calling all Apple fans (not the fruit, the brand); although an apple a day does keep the doctor away, so you should be a fan of that apple as well. Anyway the iPoo toilet concept was created by Milos Paripovic in an attempt to poke fun at the Apple-obsessed.
Milo hilariously points out —in a satirical information sheet about the product— that the toilet has the same exact function as any other toilet, but costs twice as much. Remind you of anything? Milo says you will seem cooler to your friends by telling them you use an iPoo toilet instead of throwing your “business” through the bathroom window; his words not mine. Lol
6. Squat Toilet
This one is just as gross as it sounds; I mean, you can’t really add sophistication to the word ‘squat’. If you’ve ever travelled to Tibet you might have seen one of these during your trip, my only hope is that you didn’t have to actually use one.
The squat toilet is not for the timid, because not only are there no doors for privacy, but you can even look down into the toilet hole and see the empty abyss below. Even a fancy spot such as the Patola Palace Hotel has one of these; this one was built over 300 years ago and is located at an altitude of 3700 meters—one of the highest toilets in the world.
5. Pod Toilets
In a galaxy far, far away were these really weird toilets shaped like pods; oh, wait these are actually in London. If you’re ever in the Picadilly Circus area of London you might want to stop by a cozy little restaurant called Sketch. You’ll need to order lots of fluids just so you can experience the sci-fi looking toilets in their posh bathroom.
Just a heads up, the pods play futuristic music and feature color changing LED lights while you sit and do your business in these egg-like pods. But just a little tip, if you are claustrophobic you might want to stick to the good old ceramic toilets, just trust me on this one.
4. PlayStation Toilet
Ever wanted to sit on a comfortable toilet seat while playing your favorite game of Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty? Well in 2007 some people were able to live this dream while at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. Several rows of toilets were set up inside the convention center and gamers could sit on top of the toilet seats with PlayStation monitors and consoles in front of them.
And yes, there were tissue holders with tissues provided as well. I’m not sure if the need arose for any of the gamers to actually use these super convenient toilet seat/gaming chairs, but it’s good to have the option.
3. Ski Slope Toilet
This one is definitely for the adrenaline junkie, or I should say the ‘wanna be’ adrenaline junkie. If you’re too much of a chicken to actually hit the icy slopes this may be a great alternative.
Since people actually pee their pants when they see the treacherous slope, Coca Cola decided to create ski slope toilet cubicles at a ski resort in Japan during a campaign in 2013.
Guests at the Japanese ski resort could sit on the toilet inside cubicles which were wrapped in 360 views of a steep ski slope surrounded by icy mountains as walls. But that’s not all, while sitting on the toilet you even had the option of putting on skis, giving you the full experience.
2. Barrel Toilet
Before I die I would love to use a toilet shaped like a barrel, said no one ever. But someone decided to create one anyway and it actually makes sense. A Whiskey Distillery located in South Carolina decided to do something creative by replicating their whiskey barrels into a cool bathroom design.
And their creative idea seems to have paid off; in 2015, Charleston Distilling even became a finalist for Best Restroom in America. So if you’ve ever wanted to pee in a barrel, and tour a whiskey distillery, you can now knock these two things off your bucket list.
1. 18- karat Gold Toilet
And finally we come to the most expensive toilet in the world, made from 18-karat gold. This fantastic gold pooper currently resides in the Guggenheim Museum in New York City and was designed by Italian artist, Maurizio Cattelan.
Since the fully functioning art piece was unveiled in 2016, people have travelled from near and far the view the shiney gold throne. But, the news gets even better, not only are you allowed to look at this masterpiece, the artist wants you to use it; yes, you can actually brag to your friends that you used the most expensive toilet in the world. Meanwhile the rest of us peasants are just here sitting on ceramic toilets, how lame is that?!
